The course usually takes 4 to 5 years and is completed with several oral and written exams together with a thesis. The last cohort of licentiate students began at the IPMZ in autumn 2005 and need to complete their studies by 2015 when this course is finally discontinued.

The course is taught in German with some individual seminars offered in English. As a lot of the relevant literature is in English a good command of the English language is necessary.
This empirically oriented social science subject requires that students make themselves familiar with empirical research methods and statistics.
